NAVIGATING COMPLEX ILLNESS

FORUM FOR INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE CONFERENCE ON     NAVIGATING CHRONIC COMPLEX ILLNESS PROVIDED OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH NATION’S LEADERS TREATING THE CHRONICALLY SICK PATIENT

The number of chronically ill individuals continues to steadily increase.

The number of chronically ill individuals continues to steadily increase.

Last week I had the privilege to attend a gathering of a select group of the nation’s best health care providers who have accepted the challenge to treat the sickest of the sick.

The conference which took place in San Diego, California was organized by the Forum for Integrative Medicine and the topic was “Navigating Complex Chronic Illness”.

The atmosphere of the conference was one of compassion for the suffering and passion for the understanding of the best ways to identify the root causes of chronic, complex illness and to allow and facilitate the body to heal itself.

Participants were treated to very stimulating presentations of the latest clinical  pearls for treatment of a group of devastating diseases including autoimmunity, illness due to mold exposure, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headaches, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Morgellon’s disease, dementia and other degenerative brain disorders,  a host of hormone disorders, depression and anxiety, insomnia, cancer, PANDAS, autism, and many other conditions.  Presenters included a “Who’s Who” of the nation’s best practitioners in this field.  Those in attendance were treated with the most recent understanding of how chronic inflammation-based disease is caused by the harmful effects of toxins (poisonous substances that we get from the germs in our bodies) and toxicants (damaging substances that man has polluted into the environment (80,000 different chemical substances with 2,500 new ones being added every year).  We discussed how our inherited genetic traits along with the factors that determine how those traits are expressed (a process known as epigenetics) dictates how each individual has a different predisposition to manifest illness when we encounter the various toxins and toxicants in our world.

Our environment is rapidly becoming polluted with harmful man-made toxicants.

Our environment is rapidly becoming polluted with harmful man-made toxicants.

CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON THE ROLE THAT PERSISTENT INFECTION BY “STEALTH PATHOGENS” IN CONTRIBUTING TO CHRONIC COMPLEX ILLNESS

The experts presented the role that numerous “stealth germs” play in setting up persistent infections in our tissues.  In the past it was accepted dogma that one germ caused one disease and that our bodies were for the most part sterile.  Our current paradigm which is becoming more completely understood day by day indicates that we all literally have a “zoo” of microbes in our bodies.  Some subsist peacefully with us and in fact provide necessary support (the healthy intestinal “microbiome” for example) while many others contribute to disease (think HIV virus, the Borrelia spirochete causing Lyme disease, mycoplasma causing chronic lung disease, Strep bacteria causing PANDAS as examples).  These stealth pathogens (harmful microbes) include viruses, bacteria, rickettsia, yeasts, fungi, protozoans (single-cell parasites), and helminths (parasitic worms) cause symptoms by complicated mechanisms.  Many of them can make proteins and other molecules that break down our tissues, weaken our immune systems, imbalance our hormones, and rob us of vital nutrients.

At the same time that the biotoxins made by the germs are causing damage, our body’s own immune system tries its best to halt the infection by creating inflammation to thwart the damage.  Unfortunately in the process of doing so, the immune system creates its own set of harmful proteins and small molecules that also have a harmful, toxic effect on our cells and tissues.  In this way our immune system is really a two edged sword.  Seems as though we can’t live with it and we can’t live without it so to speak.

LATEST TECHNIQUES FOR ASSISTING THE BODY TO SELF-HEAL FROM THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC INFECTION AND EXPOSURE TO ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS WAS EMPHASIZED

We learned about exciting techniques (many just becoming available to our clinics now) that can be used to accurately identify and characterize these many lurking germs that up until now have been next to impossible to identify.  The experts presented an impressive armamentarium of tools and techniques useful to provide natural measures to “remove, restore, replace and regenerate” the body.  We discussed the role of plant-based botanical agents, energy techniques, proper adjustment of diet and lifestyle, replacement of healing nutrients, and healing hands-techniques including applied kinesiology (muscle testing).

I always feel fulfilled after returning from a medical conference if I can institute one or two new techniques to better care for my patients.  In San Diego after the 20 hours of formal lectures, case presentations, and lively question and answer sessions I came away with 54 pages of clinical pearls and a very long list of new protocols and modalities to better assist my complex, chronically ill patients to navigate their way back to restoration of true health and wellness.

I want to thank Scott Forsgren, the Better Health Guy, and Susan McAmish  and her team at Beyond Balance for organizing the event.  I also want to acknowledge the generous contributions of the stimulating presenters who included Dietrich Klinghardt MD, Kristine Gedroich MD, Ann Corson MD, Ginger Savely DNP, Steve Harris MD, Raj Patel MD, Sunja Schweig MD, Michael Lebowitz DC, Todd Thoring ND, Kelly McCann MD, Amy Joy Smith NP, and Christabelle Yeoh MD.  I came away with the sensation that I had spent three days “drinking from a fire hose” of knowledge.  What a blessing!

BIOTOXIN ILLNESS REQUIRES A MEDICAL DETECTIVE

Your Persistent Illness May Call for a Medical Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

Our mission at Texas Integrative Medicine is to help an individual regain true health and wellness that they have been unable to achieve.  Often a variety of different attempts that usually involve visits to any number of health care providers both traditional and non-traditional have not provided the answers and results that our guests are seeking.  It is not at all unusual for our patients to have seen 5-10 practitioners over a period of years without getting meaningful answers.  We see our role as modern day medical Sherlock Holmes.

To help our patients we have to become health and wellness detectives.  Our approach to health restoration starts with a very thorough history of the guest’s prior symptoms, treatments, and environmental exposures.  A careful physical examination is often helpful in revealing additional clues to solving the case.  We must learn about the guest’s family tendencies for a variety of diseases.  Due to individual variation in susceptibility to disease from environmental triggers that are mediated by genes, we find that many of our guests get sick from environmental triggers that may not cause any symptoms in others around them who are exposed to the same triggers.

What Are the Symptoms of Chronic Illness Caused by Exposure to Environmental Toxins?

Persons who suffer from a multitude of symptoms involving multiple systems often have Environmental Illness.  Headaches, Brain Fog, Confusion, Extreme Fatigue, Joint Pain, Muscle Pain, Symptoms of Irritable Bowel, Bloating, Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain, Anxiety, Panic Attack, Depression, Weakness, Numbness and Tingling, Insomnia/Trouble Sleeping, Intolerance of Exercise, Loss of Focus, Poor Libido, Tremulousness, Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat, Hormone Imbalance, Abnormal Periods, Infertility can all be seen with toxin exposure to both manmade and biological toxins (Biotoxins).

Are You the Proverbial CANARY IN THE COALMINE?Canary in Coalmine Cartoon

To use an analogy- like the tiny bird that would become ill at the first sign of poisonous gas in a coalmine, our patients are like A Canary in a Coalmine.  They are the first to experience illness from toxic environmental exposure from various sources.  As we further degrade our environment more and more individuals are becoming Canaries!

Are You Being Exposed to the Same Agents Used for Biological Warfare?

We have found that the various triggers of illness often include a variety of biotoxins given off by a variety of germs in the environment.  Many viruses, bacteria, molds, yeasts, and parasites produce powerful toxins that have been shown to cause on-going chronic disease.  In fact the concept of biological warfare is based on the potency and lethality of many of these biotoxins.  Identification of the presence and actions of a variety of  biotoxins explains some of the illness that we see in our daily practice.

If we identify that biotoxins are playing a triggering role in our guest’s illness, the first step in recovery is to help to remove on-going exposure to further biotoxin.  This may involve modifying an individual’s home or work environment (as in the case of toxic black mold associated with a water damaged building).  This may involve modification of a guest’s diet or lifestyle.

The next major goal is to assist the guest in elimination of biotoxins from the body.  This process often involves taking steps to improve the body’s own system of detoxification.  Many of our patients that suffer chronic disease from biotoxins have inherited suboptimal detoxification ability.  In many cases this can be at least in part overcome by taking the appropriate natural steps such as replacing necessary vitamins and other nutrients needed for optimal biotoxin elimination.

In some cases anti-infective medicines may be helpful in eliminating the germs that are producing the biotoxins.  We have found that the use of natural anti-infective agents such as natural herbs are often as effective as prescription medicines in accomplishing this goal.

If you or someone you know is suffering from persistent unexplained symptoms involving multiple systems and multiple different symptoms, it is quite possible that biotoxins are playing at least a partial role.  At Texas Integrative Medicine we provide a caring and compassionate approach to diagnosis and treatment with a constant awareness of cost and risk as we strive to provide answers for chronic illness.  We welcome the opportunity to serve as your Medical Sherlock Holmes.

Canary In A Coal Mine?

CanaryInACoalMine_2Doctor, Why Can’t I Get Well?

This is a question I get asked almost daily.

Folks who come to see us at Texas Integrative Medicine have almost always been to many other health care providers by the time they enter our door.  Many have been on multiple treatment regimens and protocols and yet still fail to experience the relief from chronic symptoms that they seek.  Some have been seen by a number of traditional doctors practicing traditional Western medicine with prescription medicines as well as a number of holistic practitioners of various backgrounds.  Many are suffering from hormone imbalance affecting thyroid and adrenal function.  Others are suffering from digestive disorder. Some have problems with their brain function including brain fog, depression, anxiety, sleep problems,  memory loss, loss of equilibrium, and headache.

The answer to the question above lies to a great extent in the fact that patients with chronic illnesses caused by inflammation that doesn’t seem to recover are often like “the canary in the coalmine”.

For years coalminers have carried caged canaries down to the depths of the coalmine as they have learned that the extreme susceptibility of canaries to the effects of toxics in the air cause them to “keel over” first.  Since the canary is the first to get sick, they keep an eye on the poor little bird as a sign of when they should all “bail out” of the toxic coalmine.

Like the canary in the coalmine, individuals who have inherited a high susceptibiliy to chronic inflammation-induced illness will react to a variety of environmental triggers like pesticides, pollution, infection from viruses, emotional stress, loss of sleep.  They will become very sick and cannot get well while others seem to be immune to the same stresses.

Each one of us has a different susceptibility to chronic disease that is largely determined by our genetic makeup.

Today, thanks to the science of the HUMAN GENOME PROJECT, we are able to determine many of the genetic markers that we receive from our parents at the moment of conception and stay with us all of our life.  Some of us receive mostly “good” genes to remove toxins, maintain strong immune system, and maintain healthy hormone balance while others do not.

When we know the genes that lead to imbalance in these important body functions, there are often steps that can be taken to reverse the imbalance.

Our inherited gene variants (or mutations) are like potholes in our metabolic pathways.  Once we identify the potholes we can often find “detours” around the potholes.

At Texas Integrative Medicine we perform painless and affordable genome analysis using a sample of the guest’s saliva to determine gene variants that predispose to chronic illness.  We can then help the guest develop a strategy to reduce and reverse the ill effects of many of these variants.  Are you a canary in the coalmine?  Make your appointment today. 512-420-9300
