FOOD TROUBLES?-WE HAVE A PLAN AT TEXAS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE

You may be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Digestion problems like bloating, pain after eating, gas, burping, constipation and diarrhea are one of the main categories of symptoms suffered by almost all of us.  In addition to making us miserable, digestive disorders often trigger inflammation in our intestinal immune system which can lead to a host of other disorders including:Abdominal Discomfort

  • HEADACHES
  • ARTHRITIS
  • AUTOIMMUNE SYNDROMES
  • DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
  • SLEEP DISORDER
  • ALLERGIES
  • IMMUNE DEFICIENCY

Disordered digestion often arises from one of three areas 1.effects of food toxins 2.allergies and intolerances to foods 3.bad effects of intestinal microbes.

Disorders of the digestive tract can lead to poor nutrient absorption, loss of vital nutrients, increased absorption and reduced clearance of toxic chemicals, and inflammation that can spread its effects throughout our bodies.

At Texas Integrative Medicine we have over twenty years of experience using a natural, holistic approach to understand the causes of each individual’s digestive problem and we institute personalized protocols to reverse the intestinal disorder in order to restore normal digestive function and end troublesome digestive symptoms.  We start with a very thorough history and physical and utilize individually selected diagnostic tests to diagnose the problem as cost-effectively as possible.  We then institute personalized protocols which may include diet modification, lifestyle modification, nutrient supplementation, and occasionally prescription medicine when deemed to be the best alternative.  This helps to end inflammation that contributes to systemic problems.  Our approach is compassionate and non-judgemental!                           Call 512-420-9300 to schedule your appointment to begin your journey toward digestive wellness.

Learn to Manage Stress to Realize True Health

In Part 1 of Stress and Chronic Illness I discussed some of the ways that sustained stress levels lead to inflammation and chemical imbalances that result in disease.  In Part 2 we will explore some strategies designed to eliminate stress and reverse some of the damaging effects on our bodies.

Here are eight strategies that have been successfully employed to relieve stress:

  • Reduce your exposure to media stress-Why worry about situations on the evening news that you cannot control?
  • Make it a priority to spend time for yourself-Take time to pursue  a hobby, enjoy nature, read a book, or meditate
  • Take time for regular physical exercise-The stress reducing benefits of vigorous physical activity are undeniable
  • Develop healthy sleep habits-Try to establish a consistent sleep routine and create a quiet, dark sleep environment
  • Learn to eat a healthy diet-Limit use of stimulants like caffeine and nicotine and avoid sugar and sweets
  • Practice self affirmations often-Learn to say positive and uplifting things to yourself-even out loud
  • Take time to listen to relaxing music and natural sounds-an environmental background sound CD can be great
  • Learn to set realistic expectations for your performance-most of us expect way too much perfection from self

Don’t forget that even if you can manage to lower your stress level even a little that the results to the health of your brain and body are often magnified.  You may find that the more you practice stress reduction, the easier it becomes.

Stopping Lyme Disease Requires Restoring Immune System Function

Lyme disease has been called the great masquerader.  It can imitate many other diseases including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

While early Lyme disease is an illness with fever and a typical “bull’s eye rash”, the late form which is more controversial is characterized by a large host of symptoms which includes severe fatigue, muscle and joints aches, tingling and numbness of the extremities, severe headache, brain fog and poor memory, mood disorder such as anxiety and depression, as well as a host of hormonal imbalances.Lyme Disease BeforeAfter

Numbers of reported cases of Lyme disease in Texas are on the rise and a recent              Texas A & M study showed the Lyme disease germ in 42% of the tics recovered from small animals in their Texas study.  Lyme disease is seriously under-diagnosed with some tests missing almost half of patients later shown to be infected.  Studies are also showing that a number of persons may carry the Lyme bacteria and yet not have the symptoms of the disease.

What is it that causes some folks not to be sick while others are devastated?  The difference appears to be in part related to the status of one’s immune system.  When the immune system is not functioning at its full capacity, the manifestations of infection with the Lyme bacteria and other related co-infections is often much worse.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM?

Scientists are learning that the immune system is susceptible to damage from nutrient deficiencies life zinc, Vitamin B12 and the active form of Folic Acid.  Toxins in our food and water are now known to take away our normal immune infection fighting capability.  Infections with certain viruses which may coexist with the Lyme infection are known to damage the immune system.  Even too much stress in our life will seriously impair our body’s ability to resist the effects of Lyme bacteria infection.

ANTIBIOTICS ALONE OFTEN NOT ENOUGH

Numerous studies are now showing that once Lyme disease enters the late or chronic stage that even long courses of antibiotic treatment may not be enough to eradicate the disease.  A multi-faceted approach including steps to rebuild the immune system, control inflammation and restore vital nutrients is required to control the severe symptoms of the disease and allow recovery.  At TEXAS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE Wally Taylor MD takes a special interest in Lyme disease and related infections and applies a multi-system, personalized approach to help the body restore immune function and combat the many effects of the illness.  Call today for an appointment 512-420-9300.

7 Ways Stress is Killing Us

Common knowledge tells us that when we are under excess stress, we get sick.  In the lastStress-month-photo                                                                                                     30 years scientists have uncovered the various ways that stress actually effects our biology to cause this to happen.  Our bodies were made to handle stress in short bursts of seconds to minutes.  Today’s fast pace causes many of us to remain in a              “stress on” state for hours even days.

1. Stress triggers the adrenal gland to release adrenalin which raises the heart rate and the blood pressure.

2.Stress triggers the adrenal gland to release the stress hormone cortisol which raises our blood sugar levels.

3.Elevated cortisol over time causes the body to gain weight.

4.Stress triggers the release of inflammation-causing chemicals called cytokines.

5.Stress alters our brain chemical balance leading to disrupted sleep patterns.

6.Stress triggers depression of our immune system which makes us susceptible to infection.

7.Stress alters brain chemical balance leading to depression and anxiety.

Although there are prescription medicines designed to reduce or reverse these effects of stress, they all have risks, side effects, and costs.  Nothing beats the best cure for stress: learning to reduce it in our lives.  In PART 2 we will explore some useful ways to reduce and eliminate stress in our crazy, modern age.  At Texas Integrative Medicine we know how STRESS works to rob us of health and joy and we use safe, effective and natural strategies to overcome it.  Call today for your appointment so we can help you beat stress. 512-420-9300
